Background of the study
Traditional coronation ceremonies have long served as the cultural fulcrum in many Nigerian societies, with Owo Local Government in Ondo State standing as a prime example. These ceremonies, deeply embedded in the history and identity of the community, provide legitimacy and continuity to chieftaincy institutions. In contemporary settings, the ceremonial rites have evolved to reflect both traditional values and modern influences, fostering an environment where cultural heritage meets contemporary governance (Adesina, 2023). Recent academic inquiries suggest that while modern political dynamics have altered the administrative frameworks, traditional coronations continue to play a crucial role in community cohesion and identity reinforcement (Bello, 2024). This study critically examines the multifaceted role of these ceremonies, addressing both their symbolic significance and their practical implications for leadership legitimacy. The interplay between ritualistic traditions and modern institutional demands creates a dynamic context in which the evolution of chieftaincy is continuously negotiated (Olawale, 2025). Emphasis is placed on understanding how these ceremonies adapt to socio-political changes while remaining anchored in longstanding customs, thus ensuring cultural resilience and social stability.
Statement of the problem
Despite the evolving socio-political landscape, traditional coronation ceremonies in Owo continue to be vital in establishing chieftaincy legitimacy. However, tensions arise between preserving ritualistic authenticity and accommodating modern administrative needs. This duality creates challenges in maintaining cultural integrity while fostering progressive leadership structures. The conflict between modern governance and traditional practices necessitates a detailed evaluation of the ceremonies’ roles, ensuring that their transformative potential is neither undervalued nor misinterpreted (Adesina, 2023).
Objectives of the study
To assess the cultural significance of traditional coronation ceremonies.
To examine their role in legitimizing contemporary chieftaincy institutions.
To recommend approaches for integrating traditional practices with modern governance.
